As a faction of the police force in Kerala seems to do what they please, flaunting all respect for law and protocol, The chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan who also handles the Home Ministry, is left having no significant counter to the accusations of the opposition.
The opposition has staged a walkout in the just reopened assembly, led by Ramesh Chennithala, the leader of the opposition and KPCC president. He had demanded answers to why the police had arrested the informer of a grave crime.
A 10 yr old child was molested in a movie theater in Edappal, Malappuram. The heinous deed was done with the help of the child’s mother. The deed was caught via a night-vision camera installed inside the theater. The footage shows a man Moideenkutty, clearly abusing the 10 year old girl and her mother simultaneously.
The Theater owner Satheesh informed Child Helpline, the helpline for children in distress. He handed over the footage of the molestation to Childline who informed the police and handed them the footage too.
But the police did not take any action and did not seem to be going to also despite several complaints. The Child helpline was forced to give the footage to a News Channel which aired it and only then did the police start any action.
The government was forced to suspend the Sub-Inspector and an official of the special branch of Changaramkulam police station. This was when the police started trying to twist the tale. The police started acting against the people who had reported the crime with vengeance in mind. The staff and owner of the theater were called several times to the police station and harassed.
And now they have arrested the owner of the theater saying he had reported the crime late to the police station. The proper channel to report crimes against children is through District Childline who then inform the police. But the police were not ready to listen to rules or laws. They say the police should have been informed first. They do not care if the protocol followed was what the law demands or is the proper channel.
All the Kerala police want is to inform the people that anyone reporting a crime should do so at their own peril. And if the police is in anyway accused of being slothful or inactive or even the perpetrators, there will be no loss to the ire of the police force.
The Kerala police is more involved in cases with other police officers as the guilty party than with anyone else. This is seen mostly in high profile cases. Makes one wonder about the cases that was not worthy enough to hog the limelight.
Since the last few months, the Kerala police seems to be embroiling themselves in one crime after the other. And not as the saviors of the day but on the wrong side of the law and in some cases, they have become murderers of the innocent.
In Varapuzha Sreejith case, the police were the murderers themselves. And as the police were being investigated, they did not think twice before threatening the family of Sreejith and terrorizing them.
The Kevin Murder of Kottayam case happened only because of police inaction. The police officer in-charge refused to go to investigate an abduction charge and the body of Kevin was found mutilated.
Most crimes in the state seems to be happening either due to inaction or the negligence or the irresponsibility of the police force. And if at all they are not involved, the investigation by the police force has become downright shoddy.
From a police force that a Keralite could be proud of, the force has fallen to the levels of the police in some northern areas of the country where the police are just stooges of the government. The force or the personnel of the police force has not changed. Then why have the police changed their stances and methods?
The DGP Loknath Behra is furious about the actions and has sought reports from the range IG and SP. The police association office-bearers have also expressed their displeasure against the actions of these police officers.
It seems a faction has formed within the police force with a sole intention of discrediting the name of the government and the Kerala state police force. And they have taken up the mantle of the miscreants. Although the Chief Minister keeps taking actions against erring officers of the police force and continuously asking for reports, this has not deterred them from doing what is wrong. If anything, it only seems to have emboldened them. And neither the chief minister nor the government nor the police officials seems strong enough to take on the might of this factional police force as they make a mockery of the law and the government and the police.
