Temple town surrounded by hills ,ponds and various historical sculptures . Melukote is such a place where we can find out many historical aspects. It has lot of specialities in sense of geographical structure and as well as in its culture. It is one of the famous divine destinations of Karnataka ,located to the north-west of Mandya district , which is known as the “Sugar City”.
Melukote has its own specifications and has its own history. It is said that ,in 12th century Ramanujacharya (propounder of Vishistadvaitta) came here and stayed here for 14 years . May be due to his influence the place is the centre of Sri Vaishnava Brahmins. Vaishanavas are basically the worshippers of Lord Vishnu.
Melukote Cheluva Narayanaswamy temple dedicated to Lord Cheluva Narayana and Yoga Narasimha temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha located atop the hills are the main spots of pilgrims. The crowd in gathers at Melukote during the time of ‘Vairamudi Brahmotsava’. Devotees from different parts of the state visit the temple during the festival. The processional deity of Lord Narayana is decorated with diamond studded ornaments and it will be a splendid view for the eyes.
The place is noted for its tasty cuisines , the ‘puliyogare’ (tamarind rice) prepared by rice,tamarind and other spices is just mouthwatering! and you should not miss to have puliyogare when you visit the place. The people of Melukote cannot go through an occasion without ‘Puliyogare’.
The people especially Brahmins, still follow traditional dressing styles . The attire of the women is here is nine-yard saree wore in Tamil style, and men mostly use ‘’dhoti” .
Other highlights in Melukote is Ponds .You can see various ponds and water bodies here and there. And has beautiful sculptures in the banks of the ponds. Rayagopura ,Dhanushkoti are other tourist highlights where people from different parts of the World visits here. The place is also favorite shooting site for the Bollywood and South Indian movies since long ago.
The place is also a centre of education and gave importance to the education of both men and women . Ancient Sanskrit scripts and writing are found here and during old times many patashalas were there . Academy of Sanskrit Research is established here by the Government Of Karnataka and the Academy has preserved 11,000 manuscripts and 35,000 books.
