Indian team lost quarterfinals in the World Women’s Hockey Championship. Team lost to Ireland in the penalty shootout. The team was playing a first quarter final since 1978.
India lost due to the poor execution in penalty shootout . Skipper Rani Rampal, Navjot Kaur and Monika failed to handle Irish goalie Ayeisha McFerran. Reena was the only scorer for India in the penalty shoot out.
Even though Indian goalkeeper Savitha managed to save two goals to keep her team in the hunt, it was not enough as Ireland scored through Roisin Upton, Alison Meeke and Chloe Watkins to enter World Cup semifinal.
The only time India entered the semifinals of the Hockey World Cup event was back in Mandelieu, France. It was a great chance for India to enter the semi finals after 44 years, but disappointed.
Both the teams made circle penetrations, one more than India in the first and second quarters, although the Indian defence withstood their attacks well.
Ireland stood against India strongly in the third quarter, not allowing them to settle in possession but, India’s defence managed to avert the danger time by time.
Indians came out strongly in the final quarter and applied pressure on the Irish defence with constant forays. The Indians were immediately rewarded when they secured the first and only penalty corner of the match in the 49th minute, but Rani’s feeble shot was easily kept out by Ireland goalie Ayeisha McFerran.
Even though some hopes were generated after Reena scored, but India failed to keep the decisive penalty out, thus booking Ireland’s berth in the semi-final against Spain.
