BJP led National Democratic Alliance’s candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh is elected as the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha on Thursday. He received 125 votes , whereas UPA’s candidate BK Hariprasad got 105 votes out of total 332 . Two members from Aam Aadmi party abstained from voting.
The deputy chairman seat was left vacant after the retirement of UPA’s PJ Kurien on July 1. Prime Minister and other members of the parliament congratulated him.
“I congratulate Harivansh ji on behalf of the whole house. He has been blessed with the talent of writing. He was also a favourite of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar ji,” said Prime Minister Modi.
Harivansh Narayan Singh is a former journalist and JD(U) parliamentarian from Bihar. Hariprasad is Congress MP from Karnataka.
