All five shutters of Idukki dam were opened for the time first in 40 years. High alert issued in Idukki. The water level in the dam has reached to 2,401.50 ft. Three shutters were opened on Friday morning. Earlier, all five shutters of the Cheruthoni dam was opened in 1981.
Holiday has been declared to all the government offices in Ernakulam and Thrissur district on Friday afternoon.
District collector has urged the people living near the Cheruthoni valley and in an area of 100 mtrs near Cheruthoni and Periyar rivers to shift from there.
The authorities said they have taken precautionary measures to sustain the heavy flow of water. Rehabilitation camps have been set up to help the people.
District collector said that now 1,20,000 litres of water is flowing out per second. By 2 pm the water flow might double to 6 lakh litres per second. However, the water level in the dam is rising at an alarming rate and the officials have decided to keep the shutter open throughout the night.
