The Powerful earthquake in Indonesia which took the lives of 320 people lifted the island it struck by as much as 10 inches (25 centimetres).
The scientists from NASA and California Institute of Technology jointly made a ground deformation map and measured changes in the Island’s surface. They used the satellite images of Lombok from the days of quake. In the northwest of the island near the epicenter, the cracking faultline lifted the earth by a quarter of a meter. In other places it dropped by 5-15 centimeters(2-6 inches).
The earthquake which happened a week ago made 2,70,000 people homeless and destroyed about 68,000 homes.
The magnitude of the quake was 7.0, the people of Lombok are still stumbling and are slowly getting back to the normal life.
NASA said satellite observations can help authorities respond to earthquakes and other natural or manmade disasters.
Indonesia is more prone to earthquake and natural disasters as it lies on the “Ring of Fire”, an arc of volcanoes and faultlines in the Pacific Basin.
