Among Indians there has been a 300 percent increase in the incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD). In these affected ones, 2-6% is from rural India and 2-12% is from urban India.
Lifestyle factor which is behind this includes increased consumption of alcohol which can exacerbate the risk of acquiring CAD.
With the excessive consumption of alcohol, it can cause a buildup of plaque in the arteries. This condition is referred to as atherosclerosis. This will lead to block arteries partially or completely. This will in turn reduce the flow of blood. Uncontrolled CAD can lead to heart attack with the pass of time.
Dr.Manoj Kumar, Max Super Speciality Hospital said, “alcohol over consumption can put your heart at risk. Excess alcohol can directly damage the heart muscle and cause arrhythmia. It is also a contributing factor for weight gain, high triglycerides and blood pressure and strokes. It is imperative to avoid binge drinking and keep one or more alcohol-free days every week. The symptoms of CAD may begin to show up only after a long time and by then, there could already be a significant blockage in your heart.”
He further added these blockages in arteries tend to develop from a very young age. Some amount of blockage is common and our life choices make the situation worse.
