A shutter of the Idukki Cheruthoni dam was lifted on Saturday morning. One among the five shutters was lifted by 50 centimetres and 50,000 lakh litre water per second is released from the reservoir.
The water level in the reservoir has been increasing. Officials made clear that there is no need of panic as only one shutter of the dam is opened. However, alert has been issued to the people living near the Cheruthoni river valley.
Heavy downpour has forced the KSEB authorities to open 13 dams including Mattupetti dam and Malampuzha dam . The water level in the Mullaperiyar dam has reached 132 ft.
Indian Meteriological Department had warned the low–pressure areas. The red alert is continued in Idukki, Malappuram district may receive the highest rainfall in 24 hours.
