On Thursday, environmentalist Prof GD Agarwal who is popularly known as Swami Gyanswarup Sanand died in Haridwar.
He was fasting for the past 111 days demanding a clean Ganga. Earlier on Wednesday, as his health was getting worse, he was forcibly taken to AIIMS hospital from his Matri Sadan ashram.
The former IIT Professor was fasting from June onwards and demanded that Ganga river should flow undisrupted. He even wanted to stop the ongoing hydro power projects on the Ganga basin. Also he has demanded the approval of the Ganga Protection and Management Act.
During the UPA tenure, Swami Sanand was a member of National River Ganga Basin Authority. Earlier, In 2011, Swami Nigamanand of Matri Sadan died after fasting for two months asking a ban on illegal mining in Ganga river.
