Through fake android apps, many Indian bank customers have been fooled by scamsters.
As per reports provided by Sophos Labs, an IT security firm, customers of at least 7 banks, SBI, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, BoB, Yes Bank and Citi Bank might have lost their data from their mobile phones through these fake apps.
The fake apps on the android Play Store resemble the bank’s original app and customers have been attracted and they indeed download and the install the app. These fake apps might offer some gifts at the time of installation.
Reportedly, only few banks ensure that they will conduct an investigation and all banks have not fully acknowledged the existence of such a menace. Yes Bank informed that they have handed over the case to their cyber fraud department. The State Bank of India is yet to respond to this.
Some of these fake apps were “too good to be true.” Some of these apps carried malware’s which are capable of stealing other information’s stored by the user in their phones.
Recently, Google has taken some steps to solve this issue created by rogue apps. It is high time and banks need to devise their own ways to top such threats and needed to introduce some steps to prevent customers falling to such traps.
