Uttar Pradesh government renamed Ekana International Stadium in Lucknow as “The Bharat Ratan Atal Bihari Vajpayee International Cricket Stadium” on Monday ahead of hosting its first ever international cricket match.
The India- West Indies T20 which is going to play today will be the first game the stadium that host under the new name. The proposal for the new name was approved by the UP Governor Ram Naik and the orders were issued by the Urban Planning Department Principal Secretary Nitin Ramesh Gokarn.
The stadium was renamed as a mark of respect towards Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who represented Lucknow in the parliament. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Member of Parliament from Lucknow for five consecutive times between 1991 to 2009.
The stadium has the seating capacity of 50,000. This was constructed during the tenure of the then Chief Minister of UP Akhilesh Yadav (Samajwadi Party).
