Actor turned Politician Kamal Haasan, on his 64th birthday today, announced that his party Makkal Needhi Maiam is ready to contest by-elections in 20 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu.
“No one is sure when or whether the bypolls will be held. However, we are ready to contest the polls as and when they are held,” said Kamal Haasan to the media.
Kamal Haasan launched his party Makkal Needhi Maiam after another star of South Indian Cinema Rajinikanth revealed his plans of forming a new party. Both the actors have been trying to fill the leadership in Tamil Nadu after the demise of AIADMK Chief J Jayalalitha and DMK Supremo M Karunanidhi. However, Rajinikanth has not yet announced any details about his party launch, but that is expected on his birthday.
Speaking about his party he said that, Makkal Needhi Maiam had already filled 80 percent of the posts at the field level in all the 20 constituencies.
He also said that he and his party is ready to accept the suggestions from the people and is not ready to make any promises.
The by-elections became necessary after the Madras High Court announced the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs loyal to TTV Dinakaran (nephew of Sasikala). Apart from the 18 seats , other two seats left vacant in Tiruvarur and Thiruparankundram following the deaths of M. Karunanidhi and AK Bose.
If there will be by-elections, it will be a crucial test for E.Palaniswami led AIADMK government as this will decide the fate of the government.
While speaking to media, Kamal Haasan said that he want to be the tool of the people and not of any political party or group. He said,“If corruption is removed, measures taken through every state government department will flourish,”
