The Kerala High Court disqualified Azhikode MLA KM Shaji on Friday. The High Court disqualified him over a petition claiming that he resorted to communal campaigns during the 2016 Kerala Assembly Elections. The petition was filed by MV Nikesh Kumar, who was the LDF candidate for the Azhikode constituency against Indian Union Muslim League’s KM Shaji during the 2016 elections.
MV Nikesh Kumar had accused KM Shaji of distributing pamphlets which instigate communal intentions.
The verdict was announced by Justice PD Rajan and said that he is not eligible to be a legislator. He was disqualified by the High Court for six years. The Court also directed to pay Rs. 50,000 as court expenses to MV Nikesh Kumar.
However, KM Shaji told that he will approach the court seeking a stay on the court order. Following the disqualification the Azhikode Assembly Constituency may go for by-elections.
