The organizers of 2020 Tokyo Olympics has planned to make medals for the event from recycled electronic waste. A project was started in 2017 to gather enough electronic waste including old smartphones, digital cameras and laptops.
The organizers expect to collect enough electronic waste in the end of March to extract the gold, silver and bronze enough for all medals so that the manufacturing of medals for 2020 event can be done.
The aim was to extract 30.3kg of gold, 4,100kg of silver and 2,700kg of bronze. The committee revealed that they have already collected 47,488 tons of junked devices by November.
The target for bronze was reached last year and they have already got 90% of gold and 85% of silver by October.
The Olympics committee has even used this method in preious Olympics which held in Rio. In 2016 Rio Olympics less than 30 percent of gold and silver medals were made from the waste electronic devices. And this is the first time all the medals are made out of electronice devices.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics Committee will release the design of the medals this year.
Organizers also mentioned that, from the time of the launch of the project in April, the students, athletes and public are actively cooperating with the Olympic Committee to complete the project.
